Ok so I had a Linksys WRT310N V1, and it was working fine, meaning it did what it was supposed to. Problem being that in my new place, when I moved my computer upstairs, it was ... well, slow. I lagged out of Aion a few times and downloads capped at like 75KB/sec. I have a 100ft ethernet cord, but setting it up is a pain when I just want to check something quickly. I looked into my router more and found that it only supported 2.4ghz, and there were 35 (!) other 2.4ghz access points in my wireless space.

I decided to shell out for a Cisco E3000 which supports dual-band with three antennas inside and got a new USB adapter that supported 5ghz.

Holy shit. 1.5MB/second download speeds from the same upstairs room that I was capping at 75kb/sec before (it's even bursted to 2.0MB/sec for a bit here). I'm ecstatic. Cost me $179 for the new router and $60 for the new USB wireless card.

So, if any of you guys are looking for a new router, highly recommend this Cisco E3000.

When our router died a few raids ago, we did the same thing and I'm extremely happy with the Cisco we got. The 5ghz response is pretty bangin' - it works in areas that our old router didn't.

Maybe now that Cisco owns Linksys, they are purposefully dishing out substandard parts for non-core-brand networking equipment =)

Also, if you're curious about your local wireless space, check out this freebie:

InSSIDer

Gives you fun graphs, and you can use it to see if you should try adjusting which channel you're broadcasting on. Here's a snapshot of the 2.4ghz space from my upstairs bedroom:

The thing wouldn't work unless you use "Cisco Connect", and then it randomizes your SSID so that there won't be 40 AP's named 'linksys' in your area. I got PeachDove. Works for me.

So I'm having a strange occurrence since I started primarily using my laptop in our upstairs living room as opposed to the "man cave" downstairs.

The microwave kills my connection.  Is this something that can be avoided through configuration (different channels, etc) or am I hosed?

Edit - I can post more specifics when I get home, posting from work ATM.
