The WinSxS version of comctl32.dll that is being installed with KB2296011 ("Important" from Windows Update) is giving some of my programs fits:

Anyone else get that? I can reliably fix it by removing that security update, and reliably break it again by reinstalling.

I didn't have any issues with it.

Have you tried downloading the update locally and installing it? Here's a link to it.

If that doesn't work, try rebooting into Safe Mode and installing it from there.  I ran into a pesky update like this about 9 months ago and had to do it that way to get it to install.

If that doesn't work, your error message implies a corrupt .dll file.  Not sure if you tried this but open an elevated (administrator) command prompt and run "sfc /scannow".  This will check all your Windows 7 files against the correct version hashes to check for presence or corruption.  SFC will repair and replace any of those files and outputs results here: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log  You also might want to run a chkdsk on your windows partition to ensure stability.

Try running the local KB update again after a successful scan.  I hope one of those 2 solutions works.

I did the sfc /scannow command before I posted, and it just said that it couldn't repair it. Tried it in safe mode and in recovery mode too, neither worked. The only thing that works is removing the patch (downloading the MSU file and giving it /uninstall as an argument).

I'll try force-installing the msu file from safe mode - hadn't thought of that. I might try running memtest86 if I get desperate.

I reaallllllly don't want to have to wipe my machine out. It'd take so long to reinstall everything... sigh...

I figured maybe my weekly defragger accidentally fucked some files or something, but removing and reinstalling the patch should've fixed that.

Only other thing I can think of is that I'm actually afflicted by an exploit or something that's abusing the file.
