My video card has been running a bit hot recently. I've ordered a better cooler for it, but in the meantime i've just been opening the case to get some more airflow when i need to. I was playing some Mass Effect 2 and was getting some artifacting so I opened the case up. I disconnected the fan from the door panel and while doing so my computer shut off. I know I probably should have shut it off before disconnecting the fan, but i'd done it in the past with no problems.

Anyway, now when I turn the power on all the fans and drives spin up but there's no activity from the hard drive light, and I don't get the POST screen (or any video signal even) on the monitor. I checked all the power connections, and unplugged the hard drive and dvd drives but get the same result each time. Unfortunately I don't have another system to plug the components into to test any of them. From some quick googling it seems like a fried motherboard/cpu is a possibility.

Is there an easy way to know what component is acting up? I don't want to shell out the money for a new mobo/cpu only to find out that's not the issue. I can likely get another system to test components on in a couple days (my one real techie friend is unavailable for the weekend), but right now I don't have access to any other desktop to try things in.

here are my specs:

ASUS P5Q3 motherboard
intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66GHz CPU
2 GB Corsair RAM
Sapphire HD 4850 512MB GPU
Corsair 550W PSU

any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ticket # 23246262-A235  Hi, my name is Rodrigo Sanchez.  I am technician #24516.  Sorry for your long wait times, we've been busy tonight.  Do you get any POST codes (beep codes or is the mother board beeping) at all on power up?

Nope, no beeps. I hit the power button, power light comes on, fans/drives spin up, that's it.

Your board doesn't have onboard video.  Is there anyway you can plug your 4850 or another (known to be working) video card and plug a monitor into it to see if you get any on screen feedback?  Even if you plug the card in and the monitor in and attempt to boot, let me know if the monitor gets a signal.

haha yeah I went to bed. I'll have access to another system to test the 4850 on tomorrow or tuesday.

The only video card I have is my old one (another 4850). I had replaced it because it was causing abnormal patterns and lines across the entire screen when I logged into windows, and would a few minutes later it would stop sending a signal at all. I could always get to the POST screen reliably though, the problems started when I got into Windows.  Anyways, stuck that in, and got the exact same result- everything spins up, no beep, no POST, no video signal at all to the monitor.

I'll handle the formal introductions:

Fizzy, meet Karaine. Karaine thinks being a total douche makes him stand out from the crowd. You've met probably a dozen of him throughout your life.

Karaine, meet Fizzy. Fizzy generally posts lighthearted musings that fly over your head and trigger your insecurity complex.

Both of you meet Thomphoolery, Thomphoolery thinks he's pretty cool and doesn't afraid of anything.

Good day and welcome to another lesson in internet trolling by "Dr." Thomphoolery.  In todays lesson we'll be launching what's known as a "baiting" attack on a member of the boards that we may not particularly like or just want to get a reaction out of.  To do so is quite simple my friends.

The first thing you must do is find your target, the easiest way to do this is find somebody who likes to speak his mind.  Usually you can classify these types of people as douche bags since they generally say things that you can easily twist and contort around to suit your needs hence making them into said douche bags.  This will make your baiting attack all that much easier as they'll more than likely explode with ramblings about your mother or some other such nonsense.

Now that you have your target, pick apart their statements to suit your own needs.  The easiest way to do this is to merely make up some psychological fallacy about the person based on their statements.  If you've had personal experience with them before and just don't like them, well then my friend you've hit the jackpot.  You can pretty much make up anything you desire as you'll have all the pertinent information you need to know about their life.

Now that you've set up your baiting attack, there's one last thing you need to do.  Simply sign the attack with something.  I recommend a simple letter as it's quite punctual and serves no real purpose but to ascertain your superiority over your target.  This will make their retort even more hilarious as they'll try and use that with their "yo mama" joke.

I hope you've all found this lesson to be quite helpful in the ways of trolling people on the internet.  May it bring you many laughs in the future.

He doesn't have to buy the whole 9 yards. He could just get the i5/i7 sandy bridge + mainboard. It still use DDR3 ram. The Mainboard will also have SATA III (6Gb/s) and  USB 3.0.
