You know why they call it Thunderbolt instead of Light Peak right?.. Thunderbolt use copper. =\..

Sandy Bridge is almost out of date. Ivy Bridge is coming out 2nd half this year. If I remember right 10-20% faster. And 4,6, and 8 core.

New SSD are coming out soon.  Intel 510 Series SATA3 SSD Launch on 1st March. C400 should also be out soon. SF-2200 will be out Q2. All will need a SATA III. I wonder when SATA 4 coming out.. hmmm

Out of date, pff! Ivy Bridge is just a processor shrink. The real solid is the architecture that came out with Sandy Bridge. Going from non-SB to SB is the real boost - another 10% due to manufacturing awesomeness is just icing =)

The copper is a good thing, imo. It let Apple daisy chain off of existing ports instead of having to provide both a Light Peak interface and another DVI/USB/etc interface.

You know people going to get Ivy Bridge right off the bat. All because it will have 3D support. lol. Like how Nvidia have that Stereoscopic 3D.

I do worry about Light Peak in the future. When it goes to 100Gbps and 1000Gbps. If that becomes back to fiber optic instead of copper. Maybe no backward compatible on the 10Gbps because it is copper? (as in you can't put fiber cable on to a copper port.)

http://erratasec.blogspot.com/2011/02/thunderbolt-introducing-new-way-to-hack.html

(There are other articles for which you can Google search for.)

I didn't bring this up before because most of the articles I've read thought the Southbridge chipset on the new Macs would support Intel's IVT (DV-t) which allows for configuring a bus to allow restricted access to predefined memory addresses from devices using those buses.  However, new Macbooks apparently contain a Southbridge which is not compatible with Intel's DV-t and thus doesn't prevent potential full DMA access over the bus.

It seems the security nerds are scratching their heads over Thunderbolt's ability to have DMA if this is truly going to be the "USB replacement".  Sadly it appears that the new MacBooks will have the same security risks as other I/O devices like Firewire, etc.  I was hoping the security for DMA I/O ports would have been bolstered to release this new technology.
